What to expect
We start with the pick up from the hotels in El Calafate and head north along Route 11 and Route 40, crossing the Patagonian steppe.
Brief stop at the historic La Leona Rest Stop, on the banks of the river of the same name, a landmark on the Patagonian Route 40.
We arrive at Puerto Bahía Túnel, 18 km from El Chaltén, and board to navigate the turquoise waters of Lake Viedma. The route skirts the southern coast of the bay, with privileged views of the Huemul Massif.
After about 40 minutes of navigation, we disembark at Bahía Cabo de Hornos for an easy hike to a panoramic point over the Bay of Icebergs, with drifting ice blocks and the Andes mountain range in the background.
We board again for the most impressive moment of the day: we navigate to the front of the Viedma Glacier, the largest in Los Glaciares National Park. From the deck, you can appreciate its bluish tones and deep crevices while the guide explains its history and formation.
After disembarking, we transfer to El Chaltén, the national trekking capital, where you have free time to explore the town. We also visit Chorrillo del Salto: a short and flat trail through native ñire forest ending at a crystal-clear waterfall surrounded by Patagonian vegetation.
We begin the return trip by road to El Calafate, where the excursion ends with arrival at the hotels.
