What to expect
With this excursion we will discover one of the most impressive landscapes offered by Salta, The Quebrada de las Conchas. We will head south along RN 68 through the towns of Cerrillos, La Merced, El Carril, Coronel Moldes, and La Viña, all located in the Lerma Valley, an agricultural and livestock area where tobacco is the main product. You will be able to see tobacco drying sheds, from old adobe ones to modern ones, and tobacco leaves spread out along fences drying in the sun. After a stop at the goat farm (dairy goat farm), where you can see different breeds of goats and cheese making, we enter the Quebrada de las Conchas through Alemanía, where from the road you can see the buildings of the Old Train Station and its branch crossing the river of the Quebrada de las Conchas. In this part of the route, you will see a variety of colors and rock formations, including the most important ones: The Devil's Throat, The Amphitheater, La Yesera, Casa de Loros, Los Castillos, Los Medanos, El Fraile, El Obelisk, Las Ventanas, among others. Once in Cafayate, we visit a winery to discover all the secrets of Salta wines, especially the famous Torrontes Wine. Cafayate is also famous for its fantastic folk Serenade that brings together artists from all over the country. After lunch, you will have free time to explore the town and its most significant places, then return to Salta where, thanks to the position of the sun and water and wind erosion, you will see a completely different landscape than on the way there. Once the tour of the Quebrada de las Conchas is finished, we will continue our return journey enjoying the beautiful landscape this region offers. Without a doubt, Cafayate is one of the most emblematic places in Northern Argentina. On this excursion, you will enjoy colors, shapes, culture, and some of the most impressive and beautiful natural landscapes you can see.
The excursion begins by traveling through part of the Lerma Valley. Passing through Cerrillos, La Merced to the town of El Carril, then Chicoana, to immediately take RP 33 westward, entering the Precordillera of the Andes through the Quebradas de Los Laureles and Escoipe. After traveling through these and discovering impressive landscapes and appreciating the cultivation terraces where local farmers grow vegetables in the same way as their ancestors did, we will start to travel the famous Cuesta del Obispo, a winding road surrounded by impressive rock formations and natural cliffs where we can spot condors, among others. We arrive at Piedra del Molino, our highest point at 3348 meters above sea level. From this point, our landscape will change radically as we leave the subtropical valley, travel the Tin Tin straight, part of the Inca Trail, make a stop at Agua de los Loros where the viewpoint of the Cachi snow-capped mountain is located, cross the Los Cardones National Park, Payogasta, and our final destination, Cachi. There, after lunch, we tour the town with its intact colonial architecture, its church, its museum that preserves the history of the indigenous communities of the area, and the artisan market where local artisans offer their textiles. Then the return to Salta.
