Arica and Parinacota Region: The Contrast Between the Pacific and the Altiplano

Favorite Activities in the Arica and Parinacota Region
The best time to visit varies depending on the area you want to explore: to enjoy the beaches of Arica, the summer months (December to March) are perfect; however, if your goal is to go up to the Altiplano (Parinacota, Putre, or Lake Chungará), the ideal time to travel is between May and November, avoiding the "Altiplano winter" which brings rain and road closures at the beginning of the year.
The territory has two distinct environments due to altitude. The coastal area enjoys a very mild coastal desert climate, known as the "city of eternal spring," where it almost never rains and temperatures remain mild all year round. In contrast, as you ascend to the Altiplano (above 3,500 meters), the climate becomes dry and high mountain, with extreme temperature swings where days are very sunny but nights register below freezing temperatures.
